In May, Peer Health Exchange launched selfsea, a web app co-designed with young people to boost access to inclusive health resources and information for youth everywhere. Due to the pandemics’ significant impact on young people’s mental health, Peer Health Exchange found that it needed to pivot to meet the needs of young people now more than ever. At the height of the pandemic, young people were no longer in classrooms, unable to meet up with friends and family or find resources that could support them with their wellbeing. selfsea is that solution, providing Peer Health Exchange with the opportunity to reach young people where they are.

“Our mission to build healthier communities with young people was always at the center of our work and we knew that to make this possible we needed to listen now more than ever,” said Lisa Walker, Assistant Vice President, Program Strategy and Innovation at Peer Health Exchange, “Young people told us that the hardest part of the pandemic is not having the support or resources they need especially for their mental wellbeing. Our partnership included them sharing what they would like to see and vetting the resources they believed were beneficial to young people.”

selfsea provides young people with support, resources, and stories from young adults who’ve been there. With the belief that self-care is community care, selfsea was designed together with young people as a place where they can see themselves reflected within a supportive and inclusive community that prioritizes their identity and experiences about mental health, sexual health, and beyond.

In the coming months, Peer Health Exchange will continue to partner with young people to improve the offering by adding additional resources, videos, and features that meet their needs.
