Today young people face issues that were not “a thing” when their parents and teachers were growing up. Because of this, it can be difficult for them to find adults who truly understand their lives. It also can be challenging for young people to talk to their friends about big issues out of fear of being made fun of or exposed. This is where selfsea comes in. In May 2021, Peer Health Exchange launched selfsea, a web  app co-designed with young people, to provide safe, inclusive, evidence-based, and identity-affirming health resources and information for youth everywhere.

selfsea offers a place where young people can see themselves reflected within a supportive and inclusive community, that prioritizes their identity and experiences about mental health, sexual health, and beyond. As a digital platform, selfsea gives Peer Health Exchange the opportunity to reach young people where they are. The app provides free and anonymous resources that aim to support youth wellbeing. “selfsea is an influential platform that provides a safe digital space for youth from diverse backgrounds to share and explore a range of essential topics,” said Dr. Danielle Busby, University of Texas Medical Branch and researcher into how trauma and self-directed violence affects youth today.

In the coming months, Peer Health Exchange will continue to partner with young people to improve the user experience by adding more resources, videos, and features that meet their needs. With over 150k new users on the app since it launched, selfsea is proving to be a leading digital resource for young people.

“Our mission to build healthier communities with young people was always at the center of our work and we knew that to make this possible we needed to listen now more than ever,” said Lisa Walker, Assistant Vice President, Program Strategy and Innovation at Peer Health Exchange, “Young people told us that the hardest part of the pandemic is not having the support or resources they need especially for their mental wellbeing. Our partnership included them sharing what they would like to see and vetting the resources they believed were beneficial to young people.”

With the belief that self-care is community care, selfsea was designed together with young people as a place where they can see themselves reflected within a supportive and inclusive community that prioritizes their identity and experiences about mental health, sexual health, and beyond.

In the coming months, Peer Health Exchange will continue to partner with young people to improve the offering by adding additional resources, videos, and features that meet their needs.
